Desmond HenryTREASURE BEACH:
ONE OF my teacher friends was very explicit. She knew that each year I publish a compilation of all my Bottom Lines from the year preceding, and that it has become a favourite of hers in her class. How so?
She explained that each time they come out, she would cut them out and then use them as teaching tools in her classes the week following. "I challenge the children to interpret the phrases both for what they say, and for what they mean."
She was adamant that I should do so before the start of the summer holidays, as it would give her more time to spend with her students.
And so to all my readers who are teacher friends, and those who are neither teachers nor friends, here are the 2000/2001 Best of Bottom Lines:
Vulgarity is the bitterness in life's meal of good taste.
There's always something about your success, that displeases even your best friends.
You do not help a drowning man by throwing him both ends of the rope.
The purpose of life, is a life of purpose.
Take time to think. It is the source of power.
All losses carry a lesson. We should make sure not to lose the lessons as well.
When eating a fruit, think of the person who planted the seed.
A genius is someone who shoots at something no one else sees and hits it.
Conscience is the inner voice that warns that someone may be watching.
Success is often the product of audacity.
A life without reflection is like a meal without digestion.
I hope by the time we reach greener pastures, we'll still be able to climb the fences.
Our minds need to be constantly fed, just like our bodies.
The best cure for drunkenness is to have a good look at a drunk, while being sober.
If you want the rainbow, you will have to put up with the rain.
Free speech and cheap talk are two entirely different things.
How old would you be, if you did not know how old you are.
If you've failed once, no matter. Try again, fail better.
Riding is the art of keeping the horse between you and the ground.
The art of prophecy is very difficult, especially when it comes to the future.
Make three correct guesses consecutively, and you'll be regarded as an expert.
The man who makes no mistakes, usually does not make anything.
In life it's not so much what you drive, as what drives you.
A smile is your personal billboard.
The fact that some were foolish in the past, is no reason for us to remain so, in the present.
Ian Sangster
Read with much regret of the recent passing of Dr. Ian Sangster, that connoisseur of good taste and impeccable standards.
His various creations of rum-based liqueurs and creams gave Jamaican manufactured products, an undisputed face of excellence in international markets. His products were recognised worldwide not only for their fine taste, but for the part they played in national imagery as well. In a sense they did for Jamaican manufacturing, what the white sands had done for our tourism. They helped to portray us as a people of excellence. And for that, we are all indebted to him.
THE BOTTOM LINE:
Hatred is never ended by more hatred, only by love.
