Protest closes Palmers Cross School

THE PALMERS Cross Primary and Junior High School, Clarendon, remained closed for a third day yesterday as students and their parents continue to demonstrate against the appointment of a new principal.

According to the May Pen police, the protests have been sparked by the appointment of Mrs. Jennis Thomas as principal and not Mrs. Mertle Rowe, the current vice-principal, whose appointment the protesters are demanding.

A senior police officer at the May Pen police station told The Gleaner that angry protesters used chains and padlocks to lock the main gate to the school preventing people from entering.

The officer said the police went to the school and cut the chain to allow access to it.

The demonstrations have been described as "peaceful to-date" by the police.

Some parents say they will remove their children if Mrs. Rowe is not appointed principal.

They said they have tried on several occasion to discuss the issue with members of the school board, but without success.

Also, they said efforts to have speak with officials of the Ministry of Education have been unsuccessful.
