C&WJ Employees' Credit Union sees growth

ASSETS OF the C&WJ Employees Co-operative Credit Union have surpassed the $1 billion mark.

Credit Union president Ertis Blake reported at the annual general meeting, on April 21, that its assets had surpasssed the $1 billion mark with a membership of over 80,000 comprising employees, past and present, and their relatives. Mr. Blake attributed the growth of the Credit Union to the under-pinning values of "self-help, self-responsibility, democracy and solidarity in the tradition of its founders."

Mr. Blake was re-elected as president, having assumed the post following the death of previous president William Bertram last year.

The Credit Union is this year marking 40 years of service and growth to employees of the telecommunications company and their relatives.

The management and membership of the Credit Union marked the milestone with several events. These included a thanksgiving service at the Webster Memorial United Church, lunch with students and staff of the Danny Williams School for the Deaf, members' appreciation functions, lunch with the founding members and a banquet at Le Meridien Jamaica Pegasus Hotel.

At the banquet, Dorinda Simpson, president and chief executive of American Partners Federal Credit Union, traced the development of the credit union movement in the southern United States and referred to similarities between the contribution of the movement to economic development in Jamaica and the United States.

Stalwart contributors to the formation and early development of the C&WJ Employees' Co-operative Credit Union and the wider movement locally were honoured on this occasion.
