STUDENTS HIGHLIGHT SOCIAL PROBLEMS

Students of St. Hugh's Preparatory School in Kingston are concerned about a number of social problems in Jamaica. Today we share their concerns in a sample of letters sent to the Editor.

We need to clean up Ja

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I LOVE Jamaica but I think that there are too much bad words, too much shooting and too many gunmen.

I also think that there are too many men bothering ladies and touching their bottoms and begging them money when they are on the road.

Please do something to stop this and put the bad people in jail and make Jamaica safe again.

I am, etc.,

Water concerns

THE EDITOR, Sir:

AS A child, I am concerned about water being locked off frequently. In the future I would like to build more wells and more dams so that we can have more sources of water.

I want to help

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM concerned about people and their jobs, I like educated people. Education is very important to me as a child. Reading and writing are important to me.

I want to help children in the future.

Who cares for street children?

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WHY DO children have to be hungry? Where are their mothers and fathers? I see them on the road every day begging for money or food. They spend their time cleaning windscreens instead of going to school.

I am afraid for them that they will be killed by bad men or cars will hit them down. Who is going to care for these children?

I am, etc.,

JAMEL WALSH

I am very scared

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM very sad because a lot of people in Jamaica are killed every day. Last week, my friend Peter died at home when he was shot and robbed by gunmen. He was only 16 years old.

The crime rate in Jamaica is very high. I am very scared and I pray to God every day so that things can get better in Jamaica.

I am, etc.,

Telephone blues

THE EDITOR, Sir:

AS A child I am concerned about the problems of the telephone company. In the future I am going to make sure that Jamaica has more than one telephone company.

Crime in schools

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM very worried about crime in the schools. Children should not be allowed to carry knives, guns or other weapons to school.

Students should be searched at the gate for weapons. A guard should check their pockets and school bag for weapons. Any student carrying weapons should be reported to the principal or vice principal. Their weapons should be taken away. Some school and movie theatres in the US have metal detectors at the entrance.

Recently a schoolboy was murdered by another student. If we were to ensure that children did not carry weapons, this might not have happened. Parents should try to explain to their children how bad it is to kill or hurt someone. Hurting or killing someone is wicked and painful for the person and their friends and family. Also crime does not pay. Criminals are hunted down and may get the death penalty. They may be hanged. They may get the gas chamber, the electric chair or lethal injection.

I want it to be safe in the schools. I also want it to be safe in Jamaica.

I am, etc.,
