THE EDITOR, Sir:
AS A teacher, I am deeply distressed at the path that our nation is treading. I write with respect to the headline of The Gleaner, May 2, 2001.
My concern in the case at hand refers to the side of the report where it was said that the fracas was as a result of the students calling each other 'chi chi men'.
This 'song' has been blasted through the airwaves on every single radio station maybe except for Love FM, Power 106 and to a lesser extent Hot 102, almost every day sometimes three times on one station, Fame FM to be exact.
I do not want to limit or muzzle any station or deprive anyone of their freedom of speech or expression, but as a nation, I think it is time we put an end to the foolishness that is eroding our country.
Songs that incite the nation's dunce to anarchy and mayhem should NOT be given airplay, and I think the body that oversees the production of so-called music in this country should not allow such trash to be unleashed on the society.
The few of us who cannot be swayed by these deejays with murderous intentions should come out against songs like these and protest against companies who advertise on those stations that air 'songs' with such insidious lyrics.
The nation has lost a son, an aspiring athlete and promising young man all through the lyrics of one irrational 'song'.
It is about time this stupidity be brought to an end to save our nation and protect our youths.
I am, etc.,
