Kudos for Radio Mona

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I HAVE been listening off and on to Jamaican radio since its inception in the 1940s. Several of the stations have had a period of testing before starting regular programming and have presented fine selections of classical music during this period. However, this always comes to an abrupt end when scheduled programmes start and the station degenerates into a source of obnoxious advertising often utilising the most repulsive elements of own culture, reggae music, seemingly endless talk shows, sports, vulgar street talk and so on, only very occasionally a classical concert.

I wish to congratulate Radio Mona for the most enjoyable classical music ever presented on such a test transmission. It has been going on for several weeks now and one of my radios is tuned to it continuously. There has been no indication to date when regular programming will start. I do not know what their plans are but as far as I am concerned they could continue as of now, indefinitely. Anything else they will come with is likely to be a backward step.

I am etc.,
