LAWYERS REPRESENTING Benz raffle-winner Dudley Vincent served summons on several members of the University of the West Indies' (UWI's) Guild of Students on Thursday.
Roderick Reid, the Guild's culture and entertainment affairs chairman, confirmed that the summonses were making the rounds.
The nine former executive members are being sued because of the failure of the Guild to deliver a luxury 2000 Benz to a man who won it in a raffle organised by them in March.
Those served summonses are Sydian Brissett, public relations officer; Eugene Kelly, external affairs chairman; Gregory Campbell, games committee chairman; and Guild outgoing vice-president Ricardo "Taz" James. They could not be reached for comment yesterday.
"When I saw Eugene's summons on Thursday, all nine of us were named," Mr. Reid told The Gleaner at the weekend adding that he hadn't received his summons.
"I was at an exam when they came to serve it. I understand someone was looking for me to serve it on Friday," he said.
He said he was unable to state the exact wording of the lawsuit because he only had a cursory look because it was Guild election day and he was busy.
Election of officers to the Guild Council which are due annually by March 31, was scheduled to be held nearly two months ago. However, the Mona Campus Council recommended that elections be postponed until the University Council considered proposals for the reorganisation of the Guild's operations.
The recommendation to cancel the elections came shortly after reports that the Guild had mismanaged the raffle, following Mr. Vincent's complaint to the University administration that he had unsuccessfully tried to get the Benz he had won.
