A poor display of manners

Hooper

THE EDITOR, Sir:

TODAY I read two reports in the newspaper that are reasons for great concern among those of us who are cricket fans and look forward to the resurgence of West Indies cricket. Both reports have to do with Mr. Carl Hooper - captain of the West Indies team.

The first is a report of an alleged statement to the effect that even if Steve Waugh was appointed captain of the West Indies team, with this crew he could do no better.

Regardless of how poorly they are performing and what problems he may be having with them, is this the way for a captain to speak in the public of his team? So much for morale.

The other has to do with appearing 17 minutes late for the toss, whilst the opposing captain and the officials wait. To be late under the circumstances is unpardonable but to shrug it off without even an apology to the visiting captain Pollock and the officials is a blatant display of poor manners. What an example to the young charges for whom he is responsible.

Finally, it will be interesting to see what is the reaction to the West Indies Cricket Board.

I am etc.,

H.W. SHARP
