Disappointed in Government, JTA

THE EDITOR, Sir:

AS A young male teacher, it is with a sense of anger and disgust at both the JTA and the Government that I write this letter.

To this very moment many teachers are in a state of shock and disbelief as to what transpired at the Jamaica Conference Centre. The government has already done an excellent job of selling the nation's teachers as "a bunch of money hungry semi-professionals", and by their acceptance, the delegates have shored up this view.

With an election on the horizon, this was an excellent opportunity for the JTA membership to finally get the government to take notice, but instead, many of the 'wiser teachers' have opted for the 'grab what we can get' course.

To the government the question must be asked, 'Can you really offer someone an extra $1000 before tax and expect them to remain motivated'?

Prime Minister Patterson, you are saying you have a vision for Jamaica, but Sir honestly, who in Jamaica do you have that vision for? I guess maybe yourself and those 'wise teachers'.

It is apparent that you have a 'wise majority' of teachers who are ready to follow you for a really small carrot.

I am etc.,

COLLIN HUTCHINSON
