Young Daniel casts his spell

Daniel Thomas

DANIEL THOMAS, Jamaica's representative to the 74th annual Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C., correctly spelt berylloid, as the first round of competition got under way yesterday afternoon.

The competition will continue over the next two days.

Daniel, who is sponsored by the Gleaner Company Ltd., is competing against 247 other contestants. All of the words in yesterday's first round came from Bee-provided study material including "Paideia", a booklet that helps students improve their vocabulary by sorting words into categories of related terminology.

As of today's second round, however, any of the 475,000 words contained in Webster's Third New International Dictionary are fair game.
