Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee - Daniel through to finals

Daniel Thomas

WITHOUT ANY "compunction" or display of "mummery", Jamaica's champion speller, Daniel Thomas, yesterday breezed through to the championship rounds of the 74th annual Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C.

Thomas, who correctly spelt "berylloid" (a 12-sided pyramid) during Tuesday's first round, advanced to the final day of competition today by correctly spelling "compunction" (regret; anxiety; pity) and "mummery" (pretentious ceremony; ridiculous performance) in rounds two and three respectively.

He is among the remaining 87 contestants from the 248 who began the spell-off on Tuesday, in contention for the Scripps Howard Championship. Competition resumes at 8:10 a.m. (DST) with round four and will proceed up to the tenth round.

ESPN will carry a live broadcast of the final day from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.
