Boys and lessons for life

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE INAUGURAL Boys' Day celebration took place at the St. Aloysius Primary School May 30, 2001. It was a rewarding and gratifying occasion.

One of the highlights of the event was a motivational talk delivered by Senator Anthony Johnson. He told the boys that in 1907 there was a terrible earthquake which destroyed the buildings in the Kingston area including those on the school grounds.

He informed the boys that after the earthquake the buildings were reconstructed by contractors. His point was that after almost 100 years we are beneficiaries of the reconstruction. Senator Johnson implored the boys to "build a good life" which would benefit not only themselves but generations to come. The boys repeated in concert "I will build a good life" three times.

Another highlight of the day was an exhortation from Mr. Howard Hamilton QC a past student of the school. Mr. Hamilton told the boys that it is a good thing to be a Jamaican. He told the boys that although the school is situated in an inner-city area they can achieve their fullest potential. He spoke in glowing terms of the Reggae Boys, Bob Marley and our Olympians stating that that many of them started out in the inner city.

I am confident that Jamaica's future is secure once the boys apply these life lessons.

I am etc.,

D.J. STENNETT.
