Producer pays tribute to wife

Brooklyn-based producer/studio and label head "Don One" Moodie will be honouring the first anniversary of the death of his wife last April, with a major promotion, Tribute To Mrs. Moodie, at Club Amazura in Queens.

The event will feature Luciano, Freddie McGregor, Glen Washington, Beenie Man, Mr. Lexx, Elephant Man, Junior Kelly, Nadine Sutherland, Ghost, Frankie Paul, Singing Melody, Ambilique, Major Mackerel, Sluggy Ranks, among others.

Mrs. Moodie was a tower of strength in the reggae recording in New York. She was actively involved with the running of the Don One Studio and label. She is greatly missed by the hundreds of artistes and musicians with whom she was associated at the studio.

Junior Reid for Reggaefest

Junior Reid is getting ready to celebrate his special day with a big bash on June 17 at MXIII in Negril. In the meantime, however, he has been fulfilling a number of engagements.

He is expected to join Beenie Man, CeCile and Ken Boothe on California Reggaefest 2001 at the Green Park, Long Beach, on July 1. The event will also feature R&B/Hip-Hop acts L.V. and Bugsy Malone.

It is being staged by Smurf Productions and is the third in the series.

Ginger gets critical acclaim

Is Ginger Knight smiling?

The playwright/producer says he actually is, with the success of his latest production, Room For Rent, which has been enjoying critical acclaim since it opened at the Pantry Playhouse in New Kingston.

The play is directed by Keith Noel and features Volier Johnson, Deon Silvera, Dayne McDonald and Rosie Murray.

Roots appears on new label

Granty Roots is back on a new label, Stampede Con-glomerate.

The conscious deejay's new single for the label, Now Knowings, is one of the main sellers on Stampede's Champion rhythm.

Roots is best known for the singles, Barber Boy Chair, which he recorded for African Star in 1995/96. His other well known song was Portmore Big Up (Henfield).

Roots hails from Constitution Hill in St. Andrew, and started with Castro Brown's New Name Muzik before recording with African Star in 1995. Although most of his time is now spent in the apparel retail business, Roots is bent on making a name in reggae music.

He rates Capleton (his former African Star labelmate) and Sizzla and says that his music is of the revolution order: "Right now di music need some a dem music deh to elevate the youth." He is planning to record an album later this year with Stampede.

Natural Black seeks to make self known

Natural Black says that he is sending a message to the industry with his latest video, Songs With Feeling/Bad Mind.

The video opens with an audition at which a number of deejays get rejected for poor lyrics.

Black's label, Organic, said that the video was necessary to make him more visible, as people have been confusing his voice on the singles with that of Mega Banton and Terror Fabulous. They say that they hope the video will introduce him to the public once and for all.

Black said that working on the video was a lot of hard work and fun. It was directed by Leo "Big Daddy" O'reggio.
