Richards mines gold in wet conditions

Richards

HELSINKI, CANA-Reuters:

JAMAICA'S Sandie Richards struck gold in the women's 400 metres, but pouring rain meant results for all events remained moderate in the Helsinki Grand Prix track & field meet yesterday.

Richards, the two-time world indoor 400 metres champion, clocked a slow 50.95 seconds in the wet conditions to beat Africans Heide Seyerling and Nadjina Kaltouma.

Seyerling of South Africa was second in a time of 51.37 seconds, while Kaltouma from Chad came third with 51.62.

Haitian Dudley Dorival was the other Caribbean winner on the programme with victory in the men's 110 metres hurdles.

Dorival clocked 13.40 seconds to prevail over Britain's Anthony Jarrett, second in 13.45, and South Africa's Shaun Downes, third with 13.48.

Suriname Laetitia Vriesde finished second behind Cuba's Zulia Calatayud in the women's 800 metres event.

Vriesdie, a silver medallist at the 1995 World Championships in Sweden and the 1999 Pan Am gold medallist in the event, finished in two minutes, 01.28 seconds behind Calatayud, whose time was 2:00.48. Tina Paulino of Mozambique was third in 2:03.15.
