Kingston capture Junior Cup crown

KINGSTON won the Key Insurance Junior Cup cricket title for the first time in 47 years when they played to a draw with Lucas in a re-scheduled game at Nelson Oval yesterday.

Having picked up three vital points by taking first innings from the match, Kingston finished with 33 points, three ahead of St. Catherine on 30.

Kingston's win was due mainly to another outstanding bowling performance from St. Elizabeth Technical schoolboy Sheldon Bentley who claimed seven for 34 from 14.1 overs to finish the competition with 39 wickets in eight matches.

Bentley who is gunning for a late call-up to the National Under-19 Trials had earlier this season helped his school to achieve the schoolboys double (WILCO Headley Cup and Spaulding Cup) with a total of 26 victims.

Resuming yesterday's second and final day at 101 for nine in reply to Kingston 223, Lucas were skittled out for 111. Tamar Hall 28, Jermaine Allen 15, Marvin Young 14 and Llewellyn Graig 10 were the only batsmen to get into double figures. Orville Clarke supported Bentley with two for 24.

Earlier, Kingston led by a solid 104 from former Jamaica player Terrence Corke (118 balls, 14 fours and a six), Gregory Buchanan 26, Sheldon Allman 24 and Andrew Richardson 20 posted a competitive total.

Although, Lucas finished 112 runs behind, Kingston did not enforce the follow-on. When play was called off at 5.05 p.m. they were 182 for nine.

Captain Ian Dewar (3-27) rocked the Kingston top order by removing Andrew Jarrett five, Kemar Mussington two and Sheldon Allman nought. Only Buchanan with an patient unbeaten 105 (196 balls, 11x4) offered any resistance to Dewar and Nicholas Brown who took two for 27.

"I think it's a tremendous performance to win the cup, it's 47 years since we last won it. Last year we finished bottom of the table," said the Kingston captain Corke.

He added that most of the young players have really done well.
