The Net and postal services

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE MAIN reason given for the postal hike is that of fears of layoffs. Companies around the world are laying off hundreds and the Jamaica postal corporation hiked fees? This is ludicrous. The reports said "the department has processed nearly six million fewer postal articles for the first four months of 2001 when compared to the same period last year. Between January and April 2000, the department processed nearly 30 million pieces. Fewer than 24 million pieces were processed during the same period in 2001."

This is a wake-up call to the people that the Internet is alive and well thus cutting out the need for regular letter.

What the postal company should do is transform itself into executive parcel company like the UPS, Fed Ex and others, to deliver packets etc., at reasonable prices, and turn the post offices into Internet cafes, so that Jamaicans in every nook and cranny can access the Internet for a fee.

I am etc,
