SAJ hosts seminar

MORE THAN 30 new entrants to the shipping industry recently participated in the annual two-day Port Orientation Seminar hosted by the Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ) to educate persons about the role and relevance of the different players in the industry. The seminar took place at the SAJ conference room, Newport West.

The seminar, which was accompanied by a tour of the Port of Kingston on the second day, addressed the role of the main players such as the Shipping Association of Jamaica; the Port Authority and Jamaica; the Maritime Authority of Jamaica; the Caribbean Shipping Association and the Caribbean Maritime Institute.

Information was also presented on various aspects of shipping operations such as the function of the multi-purpose Terminal, the Transshipment/ Container Terminal, the ship's agents and the stevedoring contractor. Allied services including Freight Forwarding and Customs Brokerage, Warehousing, cold storage and in-land transportation and haulage was also mentioned. Speakers also spoke about the role of Jamaica Customs, Port Computer Services, a subsidiary of SAJ and Marine and Allied Industries Co-operative Credit Union.
