45 named for World Champs

SYDNEY Olympics individual medalists Lorraine Graham-Fenton, Deon Hemmings and Gregory Haughton will head Jamaica's team to the eighth World Athletics Championships in Edmonton, Canada August 3-12.

Graham-Fenton and Haughton will compete in the 400m and Hemmings the 400m hurdles.

The squad, 22 men and 23 women, has at least two surprises. Sprinter Veronica Campbell and 400 metres runner Davian Clarke were both named in the relay squads of their respective events. Both athletes attended the championships but did not compete because of injury. They will have to pass fitness tests ahead of the championships.

Three schoolgirls, St. Jago's Melaine Walker who will run the 400m hurdles, Campbell of Vere Technical and relay squad member, Holmwood's Nadine Palmer have been included in the team.

High jumper Germaine Mason who was also named on the team must meet the qualifying standard for the event during the Central American and Caribbean Senior Championships which will be held in Guatemala, July 20-22. A number of athletes from the World Championship team have been named for the CAC Senior Championships.

Teams: World Championship- Females: 100m: Aleen Bailey, Astia Walker, Peta Gay Barrett, Veronica Campbell (relay), Nadine Palmer (relay).

200m: Aleen Bailey, Juliet Campbell (relay), Merlene Frazer (relay), Beverly Campbell (relay).

400m: Lorraine Graham Fenton, Sandie Richards, Allison Beckford, Catherine Scott (subject to medical), Michelle Burgher (relay). 800m: Charmaine Howell. 1500m: Mardrea Hyman. 100m hurdles: Delloreen Ennis-London, Brigitte Foster, Vonnette Dixon. 400m hurdles: Debbie-Ann Parris, Deon Hemmings, Melaine Walker.

Long jump: Elva Goulbourne. Trile jump: Trecia-Kaye Smith.

Males: 100m - Christopher Williams, Patrick Jarrett, Lindel Frater, Llewelyn Bredwood (relay), Dwight Thomas (relay), Julien Dunkley (relay).

200m: Chris Williams, Llewelyn Bredwood, Ricardo Williams. 400m: Michael McDonald, Gregory Haughton, Sanjay Ayre, Michael Blackwood (relay), Brandon Simpson (relay), Danny McFarlane (relay), Davian Clarke (relay), Orville Taylor (relay).

110m hurdles: Maurice Wignall, 400m hurdles: Ian Weakley, Neil Gardner, Mario Watts. Long jump: James Beckford. High jump: Germaine Mason. Decathlon: Claston Bernard.
