THE NEW Heaven Baptist Church's Education Enrichment Programme is more of what we need to uplift young people and help prepare them for the CXC exams.
So says Brenda Jean Barnes who placed first in mathematics in the programme which ended last week. She was also awarded the Luther Gibbs Trophy for most outstanding student.
Brenda believes that more institutions like New Haven Baptist, located on the Boulevard in St. Andrew, should be placed in every community because it was a great boost for her going into the June exams.
"It helps to motivate young people to aim higher and to achieve their goals," said the Immaculate Conception High School student. "I think it helps the community, when you have these aspiring children."
It was a delightful moment for the 16-year-old who first saw the announcement of the programme at her church and knew that it was just what she needed to get back on track. She said the main reason why she got interested in the programme was because of the low grades she was receiving in Math and English Language.
"At first I wasn't confident in Math, but now I am one of the best students in my Math class and apart from Math, I also do well in other subjects," she boasted.
Brenda was one of more than 20 students who participated in a concert held at the church last week Saturday to mark the end of the first phase of the programme. The students, who had recently completed CXC and GCE examinations all received certificates of participation.
Susan Beckford walked away with the prize for the best student in English Language while the most improved student award went to Leon Chen.
During the concert the students showered praise on their teachers Yvette and Alphanso Gayle for their guidance and attention during the programme.
