Dear counsellor: should I go to sixth form?

Dear Counsellor:

I am truly thankful to God for you as I have seen where you have helped several young people.

I am presently sitting my CXC examinations, and feel quite comfortable and confident. The problem however, is that I cannot decide whether or not to go to sixth form. My parents want me to, however, I do not really want to. Is there a benifit from going to sixth form?

Michelle

Dear Michelle:

Sixth form is not a must for all students, it is dependent on what you want to pursue. I usually advise students that if they are seeking to study at the University of Technology (UTech), then going to sixth form is a waste of time. The truth is that UTech does not require you to have Advanced level subjects for entry. It is therefore better, if you have the grades, to go to UTECH immediately after fifth form.

If you are seeking to enter a profession, however, where you will need your Advanced level subjects for example Law, Medicine or any other major at the University of the West Indies, you will need sixth form studies.

Measure your options carefully, as you should not go to sixth form marely because your parents want you to.

Another point to consider is whether you are planning to study in the US. If so, you will not need Advanced level subjects for entry. Your CXC passes along with your SAT grades will do just fine.

I would advise you to discuss this with your Guidance Counsellor who will be able to go through the process and your options with you.

All the best.

Counsellor
