Youth cricket camp starts July 6

Haynes

JAMAICA'S team to the West Indies Youth Cricket Tournament in Guyana will be chosen from among the participants at the fifth annual Capital & Credit Merchant Bank-sponsored development camp which gets underway on July 6.

The announcement was made at a press conference to launch this year's event at Le Meridien Jamaica Pegasus Hotel yesterday.

The camp, which has already produced 14 Jamaica youth representatives, targets young boys between the ages of 15 and 19 years old. It will run from July 6 to 27 at Sabina Park.

Topics for discussion at the camp include physical preparation, nutrition and hygiene; public speaking; sports psychology; treatment of injuries in sport with emphasis on cricket; introduction to savings and investment; talking to the media; deportment and grooming, and mock interviews.

Kingston College's head coach Roy McLean tops the list of instructors which will also include Junior Bennett, Leonard Levy, David Bernard Snr, Gibbs Williams and national coach Robert Haynes.

Speaking at yesterday's press conference, Capital and Credit's president, Curtis Martin said: "We not only want to be a sponsor of a sport enjoyed by Jamaicans from all walks of life but also to assist in the development of the sport and the young men who seek to be stars of the future."

Sponsorship for the camp has been increased from $500,000 to $800,000.

Chairman of the Under-19 selection committee, Lynden Wright said the five years have been worth it.

"When we reflect on the achievements, it makes us proud. It was all worth it," he said as he highlighted the achievement of many of the youngsters who have passed through the camp.
