C&W sponsors Ja St. Leger

TELECOMMUNICATION giant Cable and Wireless has joined forces with the horseracing industry and will sponsor the final leg of the local Triple Crown, the Jamaica St. Leger. The race will be run at Caymanas Park on July 7 over 2000 metres.

To be run as the (World Talk) Jamaica St. Leger, the race worth a whopping $1.7m will feature a rematch between AWESOME POWER, the flying filly in line for the local horseracing's Triple Crown and the colt MILLIMETRE.

Both three-year-olds had an epic duel in the 81st running of the Red Stripe Jamaica Derby when the classy filly AWESOME POWER turned in a good display to beat the 3-5 favourite MILLIMETRE by a nose.

As a result of that success, AWESOME POWER is on line to become the first filly to win the Triple Crown at Caymanas Park.

Cable and Wireless has pumped in one million dollars of the $1.7m purse. They will also increase the purses of three other events on the card; a 1300 metre sprint (for three-year-olds) worth $500,000, the Terremoto Trophy (for two-year-olds) over 1100 metres for a purse of $400,000 and a $100,000 claiming event over the circular 1820 metres course for $260,000. This was announced at a press conference hosted by CTL and Cable and Wireless at the New Kingston Hilton Hotel yesterday to launch the (World Talk) Jamaica St. Leger Race Day.

Millicent Lynch, executive manager of marketing at CTL, had high praises for the deal between her company and Cable and Wireless.

According to Lynch "Caymanas Track Limited is confident the association with World Talk will be fruitful because of the detailed negotiations which have taken place over the past 13 months with several people at different levels." Also speaking at the function was Gordon Matthews, head of Cable & Wireless' Card Services department.
