Values education across generations THE EDITOR, Sir: VALUES ARE not fixed but are relative to generations. The values taught to one generation may be altered or discarded during the reign of generation that was taught. Therefore, subsequent generations may be robbed of good values. Some members of this generation believe that the values of the old days are not suitable in this time. Is it that values which foster peace and love no longer work? It would be sad, but true, that some of the values, now being embraced, fail to foster peace and love. The values of the old days, I suppose, spurred effective means for dealing with social conflicts, which is one of the causes for the spate of murders in our society. This generation has moved away from the values, which foster respect for country. The National Anthem is being viewed, by some, as a music, which should make one dance and not as a lyric, which pulls out of us a feeling of pride and patriotism. Some persons no longer stand, more so to position at attention while the anthem plays. Is it a matter of refusing to conform to 'old time values'. If this generation, as I see it, has discarded the values of the golden agers, then the next generation is in serious trouble. It will be armed with values embraced by this generation. Can this be dealt with? I am, etc., CANUTE WHITE E-mail: kenia@anngel.com.jm
