Ms Cornwall crowned

Tamara Pinnock.

WESTERN BUREAU:

CROWD FAVOURITE, 22-year-old Tamara Pinnock, emerged the sparkling gem on Sunday at the Caribbean Showplace in Montego Bay. She walked away with the coveted Miss Jamaica World Cornwall title and over $250,000 in cash and prizes.

"I feel honoured and I am extremely pleased as well," said a beaming Pinnock moments after being crowned by the outgoing queen, Trudian Collins. "I intend to be a very good ambassador for the county as I also intend to win the national title as well."

The charming Pinnock, an employee of the Ritz Carlton Hotel, took home the $50,000 cash prize and was also awarded with other prizes, including trips to the United States and Cuba, items of jewellery and appliances and numerous gift certificates.

Lois Senior, who also drew huge applause each time she stepped on stage, took second place while the elegant Nekeshia Gayle, who walked away with the sectional prize for 'Best Figure', took third place. Camille Wilson, fourth, and Corneila Chin, fifth, completed the top five.

Even before the show started, it was obvious something special was going unfold. The city's socialites were out creating a spectacle and several fans were thrilled by the jungle-like decor of the stage area.

When the event began, the twenty contestants, flanked by the dancing Goofy Brothers, all dressed in various camouflage-style military outfits, made a colourful entrance. The large crowd immediately went wild.

The enterprising chit-chat of emcees Lloyd B Smith and Jackie Norman, the breath-taking dance routines of the Goofy Brothers and the appearances of the girls, all added up to an evening of colour and class.

The afternoon's performance came from the six-member To-Isis outfit which had patrons in awe with their singing and dancing routine. In fact, had the group granted the encore the crowd begged for they could have probably upstaged the 'crowning affair'.

Clad in camouflage military fatigues, which was apparently the outfit of choice for the evening, the velvet-smooth To-Isis unleashed the popular song, Fiesta, then went into overdrive with the song Angel before a John Holt medley.
