THE EDITOR, Sir:
BRAVO! COMMENDATIONS for the stout battle your newspaper put up against Raymond Clough's legal process intended to prevent the public from knowing how he treats his clients. Your subsequent story about Mr. Clough's sharp practices on the front page of The Gleaner was well researched and well written. It is an example of good investigative journalism. Keep it up.
This should be the minimum standard that all journalists in Jamaica must strive to achieve. The freedom of the press is not an end in itself but a means to an end. The end is the performance of a service to ensure the enjoyment of the right to information that is the entitlement of all citizens of a free and democratic society.
Once the press performs its duty fairly and properly and is allowed to do so without undue hindrance, then those like Mr. Clough will be exposed and dealt with appropriately by the unsuspecting public. That freedom is even more powerful in dealing with the abuse of power by errant government officials and arrogant politicians. Those who would be so inclined must now think twice.
