MoBay wants green area

THE EDITOR, Sir:

ONCE AGAIN a Government agency (UDC) is planning to remove from the people of Montego Bay access to its one piece of green open park land near to the centre of the town. Do the people not warrant any consideration? Do environmental rights, civic rights, amenities for the people mean nothing to Government? How many more fences are to be erected to keep the Jamaican people from the sea?

Jamaica belongs to its people and this former hospital site on the sea belongs to the people of Montego Bay. The proposed use for this site shows a gross disinterest for the man on the street and his needs. Hundreds of people enjoy that open space each day and have done so for many, many years.

Make no mistake, there are strong feelings here in this city about that piece of open ground. It must not be taken from the people. One of the most extraordinary factors in this matter is the utter silence of both MPs and Opposition caretakers. Doesn't anybody care?

I am etc,

GEOFFREY DE
