Russell storms into third round

Russell

JAMAICAN TEENAGER Ryan Russell charged into the third round of the Boys Championship at Wimbledon yesterday with a straight sets victory over Britain's Matthew Smith.

After stunning No. 7 seed Ytai Abougzir of the United States in three tough sets in the first round, Russell, who will celebrate his 18th birthday on Friday, found the going easier against Smith.

The speedy lefthander cruised through the first set 6-2 and, although struggling on serve, clinched the second set in a tiebreak, 7-4. Russell had a match point in the 12th game but had to wait until the tiebreak to claim the victory. He fell behind 3-1 but then fought back to win the next five points and all but seal the win.

The Montego Bay-based player now faces No. 10 seed Roman Valent of Switzerland in the third round.

Russell is also entered in the Boys doubles where he is partnered by Luka Gregorc of Slovenia.
