Fine arts awards for July 30

The Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts (EMCVPA), located on Arthur Wint Drive in Kingston, is the scheduled venue for the 2001 Festival Fine Arts exhibition and awards ceremony.

The event, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. July 30, is co-ordinated by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) and is expected to showcase the nation's talent in fine arts.

Alison Sinclair, head of the fine arts organising committee, told The Sunday Gleaner that the change in venue, from the Mutual Life Gallery, was necessitated by the fact that works in the Festival Photography Competition will be displayed at the Mutual Life Gallery from July 23 to August 13.

Last year, both the fine arts and photography competitions shared an opening ceremony, although they were organised separately by the JCDC.

"This year, due to the volume of entries received in both competitions, it has become necessary to host the award ceremonies and exhibitions in different locations," Mrs. Sinclair said.

The fine arts exhibition will run for three weeks at the EMCVPA.

Some 216 entries were received in the fine arts categories of painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture and fibre arts. A special youth category - created for artists under age 18 - attracted works from aspiring artists, but was "not as well supported as hoped" said Mrs. Sinclair.

Judging of these entries have ended, and are currently being tabulated. Gold, silver and bronze medals, as well as certificates of merits, will be presented to winners.

The fine arts competition is organised annually to promote artistic talent during the Festival/Independence celebrations. Several famous artists in Jamaica had their initial exposure through the competition.
