THE EDITOR, Sir:
We are all pleased to know that the Liguanea Park in New Kingston is still on the front burner. This is most commendable.
However, one should want to know that the cultural centre, which should be a most useful productive part of the complex, is not shelved.
Some persons were opposed to a hall in the centre because of a proposal that it be named after the late Michael Manley, former Prime Minister.
We should never begrudge the establishment of monuments in memory of our leaders. I do not wish for us to follow other people and countries but up north their Presidents are remembered or honoured by the construction of centres and libraries or some other structure in appreciation.
Let us lift up the good about our leaders present and deceased!
The hall and the whole development could be so designed that it becomes another centre of attraction for tourists and our own people because of its wide cultural exhibits of past artefacts and present production of artists.
It could have productions quarterly, in forms similar to the magnificent concert held at Jamaica House last year to celebrate Independence.
It was not only well-attended and entertaining but classical and of high standard. It united the past talents and achievers scattered all over the world with the present ones here.
For all this to happen we need a wider vision of the broad horizon of human interest and know that to earn we must invest; to educate our people of our rich heritage we must establish, present, promote and maintain those features that would make us know from whence we come.
Hence we have much to build, appreciate and enjoy.
Let us then do something of lasting credit and joy for which we will all be proud.
Finally, to make this possible, we could invite partnership of public and private individual financing.
