West Ja calm

P>THINGS REMAINED calm in Western Jamaica yesterday despite the massive unrest in the Corporate Area and sections of St. Ann, arising from sporadic gunfights and the killing of at least 24 persons over the weekend leading into yesterday. The Area One Police said yesterday that they have put measures in place to thwart any unforeseen criminal elements. Parishes in Area One include Trelawny, St. James, Hanover and Westmore-land.

Commanding officer in charge of Area One Assistant Commis-sioner Linton Latty confirmed last evening that his team was on full alert to deal with situations if they arise. "We have put in place added police presence on the streets in Area One. Police personnel will have to bear the brunt of it to protect the citizens in this region and by extension Jamaica. In so doing, we have to understand the extent and hardship of our job," he said.

Some police officers told The Gleaner that they have been on the streets since 4:00 a.m. yesterday and would remain on duty indefinitely, which means they were not sure how long they would be away from families or to get a garment change. But Mr. Latty said that was part of the job routine and it applies to all members of the force.

Meanwhile, the Westmoreland police dismissed reports that roadblocks had been mounted in sections of the parish yesterday. The Gleaner monitored the situation in the parish and up to late evening things remained calm. In St. James, police maintained a strong presence in the Flankers community, following reports that there were plans afoot to block the main road.

"It was rumoured that persons were trying to block the Flankers main road but a police party has been deployed there. We will be having a full 24-hour coverage all over Area One to thwart any illegal activities that will affect public order. I am seeking the full support of the public in reporting any illegal activities across the west," Mr. Latty stated.
