PORT ANTONIO:
WORK ON the Port Antonio West Harbour Development Project is to begin this month.
The project, announced by Prime Minister P.J. Patterson in April, involves the construction of a large yacht marina, a boat yard and a hotel, the refurbishing of the Ken Wright Pier, construction of a promenade and a boardwalk and the improvement of the Musgrave Market in Port Antonio.
Vice President of the Port Authority of Jamaica, Byron Lewis the agency managing the project, said that the contractor for the project was the Danish firm, E. Pihl and Sons. He said the company had already begun to place equipment at the site.
Pointing out that the groundbreaking to kick-off the project was scheduled for today, Mr. Lewis said the venture was expected to be completed by May next year, to allow for the staging of the 'Americas Sail' competition in Port Antonio in June.
He reported that the Port Authority was working closely with the National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA) and the Portland Parish Council to ensure that the project adhered to the required rules and regulations.
Stating that the project was aimed at stimulating the economic development of Port Antonio, Mr. Lewis said its implementation would result in the improvement of the town's supporting infrastructure, including roads, drains and bridges. He appealed to the residents of Port Antonio to co-operate with the project to guarantee its success.
