Security guard shot dead by gunmen

By Livingston Moore, Freelance Writer

MAY PEN:

Two armed men on the night of Saturday July 21, shot and killed a 45-year-old security guard in May Pen Clarendon and made off with his firearm and cash of about $34,000 taken from two employees of Sports Plus Store on Main Street.

The security guard had accompanied the employees to make a deposit at the Bank of Nova Scotia, on Main Street in May Pen.

Reports are that at about 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, the security guard, 45-year-old Michael Matthews, employed to Alpha Security Company, accompanied two employees of Sport Plus to the Bank of Nova Scotia to make a night deposit. Upon arriving at the bank, two armed men who the police theorise were waiting in the vicinity of the bank, reportedly pounced on the party, opened fire on the security guard hitting him. The bearer of the money to be deposited reportedly threw the bag containing the deposit to the gunmen and ran from the scene.

The gunmen then took the security guard's firearm and the money before making their escape in a waiting motor car.

The guard was reportedly taken to the May Pen Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The May Pen police who are investigating, are looking for the two armed men who carried out the shooting and robbery.
