Reggae Boyz win 2-1 - Taylor, Wright on target

By Richard Bryan, Freelance Writer

Manchester

GOALS by Fabian Taylor and Kirk Wright turned back a spirited challenge from a Manchester Invitational XI 2-1 in their match-up against the Reggae Boyz yesterday at the Kirkvine Sports Club.

Taylor's goal scored in the ninth minute kept up his record of scoring every time he has played for the Reggae Boyz in practice games against a parish line-up.

The Reggae Boyz who showed far superior conditioning as well as cohesion had things well under control before substitute Otis Harvey, last year's most valuable player for Manchester, sneaked behind their defence to slot past Leon Gordon in the 72nd minute.

However, Wright a new recruit to Reggae Boyz squad, who had replaced a generally ineffective Walter Boyd in the 70th minute saved the day for the national side with a well-taken header. It came from Robert Scarlett's corner in the 76th minute.

The game was watched by just over 6,000 fans and was preceded by an under 20 match-up in which KSAFA's Santos outclassed their Manchester counterparts 4-0.

The presence of Walter Boyd in the starting team created early interest and although he showed glimpses of his trickery, he clearly lacked sharpness. He, however, caused a number of mistakes by the Manchester team and came close to scoring on two occasions in the second half. First he cannoned a 20 -yard free kick onto the 60th minute into the right up-right and was much too casual in the 65th minute when his gentle lob over goalkeeper Mark Muthra tipped the cross bar and went out.

Harbour View's Scarlett was the most outstanding Reggae Boy on the day as he roamed the left side at will. For the Manchester side, Leon Williams the national under 17 captain and Dave Leung who travelled to the under 20 World Cup in Argentina last month had excellent games. Coach Clovis de Oliveria however singled out Martello Peart and John Wary Knight as players he could have an interest in.
