THE EDITOR, Sir:
KINDLY ALLOW me space to comment on your article in Saturday's Gleaner entitled "Kingsley Thomas defends Highway 2000.
I have read of and heard the criticisms of the projects by the heads of the architects' and engineers' associations. It is obvious based on the potential benefits of the project to the country, that these associations are irrelevant in the new Jamaica.
It therefore is no mystery why for a number of major projects undertaken in Jamaica in recent years, for example the 400+ room Ritz Carlton hotel in Montego Bay that no local architect played a lead role in its design. Having the basic skills of one's profession is not enough to succeed.
Professions need also to have the vision, the attitude, innovativeness and mindset to deal in the globalised world economy of today.
Wake up architects and engineers! If you disagree with the highway, what are your alternatives for achieving growth in Jamaica? All I have heard coming from these associations over the past month is a diet of constant griping, complaining and criticism - no constructive suggestions apart from asking the Government to do this and to do that.
I support the development of the highway project and urge all well thinking Jamaicans to do likewise.
I am, etc.,
