Don't lose hope, trust in Jesus

THE EDITOR, Sir:

FIRST LET me express my profound sympathy to the members of the families who have suffered so much grief and trauma during the recent sad occurrences in West Kingston. Death is so final. But I must encourage them that their lives must go on. It is out of death that life springs forth. May they find the strength and determination to carry on. Don't lose hope. Trust in Jesus Christ for the peace which He alone can give.

But what is the truth behind the recent sad incidents in Western Kingston? God knows. I feel impelled to write because it is impressed upon me that a very insidious negative element has crept in, enveloping our country, and will destroy us all. There is no doubt that in our country, there is a growing lack of respect for law, order and authority. We talk about "respect due", but disrespect seems to be the order of the day, in the country at large, in the workplace, in official circles and even in the home.

The security forces stand in any society as a symbol of law and order. When this symbol is destroyed or denigrated, the conditions are fertile for the development of chaos and anarchy.

As I inferred above, I do not know the real truth behind our recent uprisings. But I must ask the security forces to uphold their symbolism of order and authority. They must act with professionalism and humanitarianism knowing that they are also under orders to God who is the only unerring Judge - the Judge of the whole world.

I must also ask those who try to denigrate them, to be careful of what can happen to the whole spectrum of law, order and authority in our country when this symbolism is weakened or destroyed.

May God help us all, and preserve the well being of Jamaica. Let us pray that truth and right will prevail. God bless Jamaica, land we love.

I am, etc.,
