CHELMSFORD, CANA:
GUIDEd by an even century from opener Gary Pratt and left-arm seamer Justin Bishop's seven-wicket haul, Young England defeated Young West Indies by 13 runs in the second under-19 limited overs international at Chlemsford yesterday.
The victory squared the three-match series 1-1 as the West Indies had won Friday's opening match by two wickets.
The young England team quickly rebounded from that defeat by amassing a challenging 241 in 49.5 overs and then dismissing the determined Windies youth cricketers for 228 in 47.3 overs.
Pratt struck 13 fours and his 113-ball knock as he featured in a second-wicket stand of 138 runs with his captain Ian Bell, who stroked seven fours in a solid 59 off 102 balls.
Left-arm seamer Kenroy Peters was the Windies' best bowler with three for 30 in his ten overs while off-spinner Omari Banks, who came into the attack late, took three for 36 in 6.5 overs.
When the West Indies under-19s batted, opener Devon Smith followed up his 75 in the first game at Hove with a fluent 66, which was laced with seven fours and a second off 74 balls.
Left-hander Smith and Tonito Willett, who made 30 off 71 balls, shared a third-wicket partnership of 88 runs but once both fell within six runs of each other, the Windies lost their way and slumped to 147 for eight.
Wicket-keeper Carlton Baugh then batted courageously for an unbeaten 47 off 46 balls with four fours and a six as he and Peters almost took the Windies' to an unlikely victory with a 67-run ninth-wicket stand.
However, Bishop, who replaced Nadeem Malik in the England line-up for the game, returned for a second spell and removed both Peters, whose 27 came off 33 balls and lastman Jermaine Lawson, who was bowled for one after facing only three deliveries.
The third and final limited overs international will be played at the same venue today.
