Pull the plug, Mr Gourzong!

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE MOST telling information in the news about the violence at Reggae Sumfest came in the quote of Mr. Gourzong telling us that although they have sought to prevent the performers from using profanities and other offensive language, "...but the crowd loves it, so there is very little we are able to do".

Mr. Gourzong, there is something you can do; you can pull the plug. The, 'artistes', Beenie Man and Bounty Killer, incited a riot and the crowd co-operated. That this happened should be no surprise to anyone familiar with Dancehall culture.

What is a surprise is that in this precarious time for Jamaica, an event that is guaranteed to lead to a further loss of respect for the island is allowed to follow such a predictable course. Bob Marley's message of One Love has been sadly ignored in Jamaica. Perhaps it's time to put the reggae back into Sumfest.

I am etc.,
