JPSCo must level with customers

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WITH THE spate of scheduled and now unscheduled power outages creating widespread havoc throughout the country, the directors of the Jamaica Public Service Company should be brought before the Office of Utilities Regulation to detail to the Jamaican people what exactly is wrong with the 'generating capacity' and what tangible measures are being implemented to rectify the situation.

It seems that nearly every week, there is another problem with some piece of equipment which necessitates these outages. Yet these problems seemed less evident before the entity was sold to private players. Perhaps this is the way private profitable power companies operate. Speculative theories such as these will continue until the management of the company lay their cards on the table and level with their customers. Until then, the OUR should insist, as was done with Cable and Wireless, that the customers of the light and power company be compensated for this pathetic service. It matters not if this is the situation in California or wherever else in the developed world.

This was not the situation before the new owners took over, so it should not be the situation now.

I am etc.,
