Murder in the church

WESTERN BUREAU:

SUNDAY, AUGUST 5 was just like any other at the Prayer Tabernacle Church in Negril, Westmoreland, when the members gathered for their weekly praise and worship.

Little did they know that, less than 24 hours later, one of their devoted members would lose his life at the hands of another member, right there in their sacred place of homage.

Huntley Golding, a 24-year-old carpenter, and an ardent member of the church was stabbed to death inside the church, during a quarrel with a fellow church member early Monday morning.

Roy Gooden, 44, a steelworker of Whitehall district, who is also a devoted member of the church, has been charged with murder.

The Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) reports that at about 1:30 a.m., both men were on the compound when an argument developed over Golding's beating of a drum. Gooden had reportedly asked Golding to stop the beating of the drum to allow him to get some sleep.

But according to the CCN, Golding did not comply with his church brother's wishes and a fight developed. A knife was used to stab Golding in the left breast. He was taken to the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Negril police say both men were watchmen at the church property, which is still under construction.
