COUNCILLORS AT the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) have urged the administration of the Council to get tough with employees who are under-performing and giving it a bad name.Their recommendations were made against the background of reports of bad manners and tardiness among some employees at the car parks managed by the KSAC.
At last Tuesday's finance committee meeting, Town Clerk Errol Greene, told councillors that he was not happy with the behaviour of some attendants.
Mr. Greene pointed out that he had to address attendants every morning when he drove by the car parks between 6:30 and 6:45 and that on a particular day, almost half of the employees, most of whom are temporary staff, had not shown up for work. "We have been getting complaints about dress and attitude. If you go up there you will see some of the (hustlers) we are trying to get rid of working side-by-side with them," said Mr. Greene.
He added that even representatives from the Contractor-General's office were among those who have contacted the KSAC querying their inability to get access to lots for which they already paid.
On a related matter, Mr. Greene also stated that employees have been given equipment such as rain coats and health insurance in some cases and that the KSAC was seeking to address their other complaints.
In June, the employees had complained of no health insurance or uniforms and inadequate security and a lack of water in the bathrooms. They had also been furious that many of them had not been made permanent and at their small pay. Mr Greene dismissed the latter, saying that some KSAC attendants were being paid three times more than the average salary for other car park attendants.
This prompted councillors in June to suggest that the temporary workers be assessed with a view to making those who meet the requirements, permanent staff, and therefore entitled to the benefits that accompany their change in status.
But at last Tuesday's meeting councillors were more concerned about the complaints of poor work attitude. Councillors Gareth Walker, Jennifer Newman and Lee Clarke among others urge the Town Clerk to be tough and to dismiss those who continue to display poor attitude on the job. "If they are temporary, you can get rid of them if they are not performing," said Councillor Walker.
"If they slip, they slide. We can't have Contractor-General writing us," agreed Councillor Clarke.
