The great potential of downtown Kingston

THE EDITOR, Sir:

DOWNTOWN KINGSTON is truly a great urban commercial setting that can fetch Jamaica tourism sector unimaginable revenue if Jamaica truly puts its heart into it. For those of us who venture daily through Kingston proper, nowhere else in Jamaica is as well planned and laid-out as downturn.

Downtown Kingston is grossly under-utilised and if you picture other 'downtowns' in major metropolises of the world, you realise the magnitude of what we are missing economically, socially, recreationally, and the swinging night-life. Downtown should be a place where workers leave their workplaces behind, but not 'downtown' because their urban apartments are just 'upstairs' of the business district.

Oh, how I would love to see a Piccadily Circus or a Times Square environment in downtown Kingston. Downtown was that way once - so I am told - and it is quite possible for it to return to that glory. I love downtown and volunteer to be part of any steering committee willing to see a transformation - the like of my dream here.

I am etc,
