It could be ganja to the rescue

THE EDITOR, Sir:

JAMAICA HAS always been at the forefront of many innovations but never went forward to mass produce and cash-in on the world market (legal market that is).

We all know 'ganja oil' that emerald liquid known abroad as hemp oil. China is now the most cost-effective source of hemp oil which is used as fuel in diesel motor vehicles, runs well with absolutely no engine modification being necessary, and gives the same mileage as diesel fuel.

The US imports industrial hemp oil from China while Jamaica is still not yet exploring this resource to replace imported diesel fuel for local use.

US farmers are seeking licences to grow hemp as a commercial crop for the fibre which produces a fabric similar to linens and to make cordage as well as hemp oil.

Hemp oil retails in the US at about $4 per gallon ($1 per litre).

To create a robust economy with a legal crop it could be ganja to the rescue.

I am, etc.,
