Big bucks for Johnson

TWO days after both his agent and Tivoli Gardens club president Edward Seaga refused to disclose the transfer fee for Jermaine Johnson, a report on the Bolton Wanderers web site stated his price at one million pounds.

The 21-year-old national midfielder was on Friday contracted to the newly-promoted English Premiership club according to a release from Tivoli Gardens FC and Graham. Both parties would not reveal the figure attached to the signing or the terms and conditions surrounding it.

A report on the Bolton Wanderers web site said the player had sealed a one million pound deal. "Jamaican midfielder Jermaine Johnson has reportedly signed a one million pound deal with Wanderers after impressing during trial spell at the club," the report read.

The speedy and skillful player has been at the club since late last month on trial during which time he impressed manager Sam Allardyce enough to be offered a contract. In joining his countryman, Ricardo Gardner at Bolton, Johnson becomes the second fully homegrown player to be contracted in the Premiership.

He is also the first Jamaican to to be signed straight into the Premier League. Others such as Walter Boyd, Theodore Whitmore and Ian Goodison earned contrcats in the Third Division while Gardner started his career in the Fisrt Division in 1998.

In other news relating to Tivoli Gardens, Jamaica Under-20 forward Christopher Nicholas who also played Manning Cup football alongside Johnson, is currently in the United States on a short term loan. The 20-year-old player is on a six-match loan with the US A League team Long Island Rough Riders. He is expected to return home before the start of the 2001/2002 National Premier League season.
