The Met Office and crying wolf

THE EDITOR, Sir:

YOUR 'LETTER of the Day' (21/08/01)echoed the sentiments and frustrations I felt throughout the weekend whilst listening to so-called 'releases' from the Met Office. Throughout Friday evening and Saturday morning the forecasters on the Weather Channel indicated that the only likely threat to Jamaica from 'Chantal', may be some heavy rainfall, thunder and breeze. However, because of the misleading local forecasts, malls such as the Springs in Kingston were busy putting up storm shutters!

Now whilst most of the shops in that mall continued to do business, a leading dry cleaner (my destination) decided to close for the day! For those at the Met Office, I issue this warning: Cry wolf too often and when the real storm cometh you will be ignored to your peril.

I am etc.,
