Leewards pacer jolts Guyana

GEORGETOWN, CANA:

TWO late wickets weakened Leeward Islands' position after fast bowler Gavin Tonge captured five wickets to help dismiss Guyana for a moderate total on the opening day of the final round West Indies youth cricket championship at Everest yesterday.

Tonge captured five for 41 as Guyana were dismissed for 173 after being sent in to bat. At stumps, Leewards were 44 for two after losing opening batsmen Nestor Piper and Dillon Webbe. In nine overs batting before the close, Leewards saw Piper hit wicket when he attempted to hook a short ball from Quason Nedd, and Dillon Webbe was lbw to Jeremiah Harris.

Earlier, Tonge getting good lateral movement on the slow Everest pitch, struck early to reduce the hosts to 32 for three which became 55 for four at lunch.

Tonge picked up a wicket before tea taken at 116 for seven, then returned to wrap up the innings by having top-scorer Devon Clements lbw for 45.

The fast bowler had struck in his first over when he had Ryan Ramdass, playing on his home ground, adjudged lbw for nought. He then removed Derwin Christian, who smashed five boundaries in 21, bowled between bat and pad with an inswinger.

Royston Crandon edged a cut at a short ball to second slip before captain Troy Cornelius continued his miserable form, run out by Piper's throw from cover to 'keeper Gareth Matthew, after being sent back by Assad Fudadin.

The best stand of the innings was realised by Fudadin and Adrian Persaud, who put together 48 for the fifth wicket.

It ended when left-hander Fudadin, who laboured for just over 3 1/4 hours for 21, was bowled by a slower delivery from fast bowler Calvin Williams.

Persaud, Guyana's most successful batsman in the Championship, followed two runs later - lofting Austin Richards to Hodge at cover. His 38 was laced with four fours from 105 balls in just under two hours.

He was soon joined in the pavilion by Lookeshwar Mohabeer, who was lbw to Tonge for one, but Leewards' hopes of a swift end to the Guyana innings after tea were thwarted by an eighth-wicket stand of 42 between Clements and Jeremiah Harris.

Once Harris was bowled by Leewards captain Chaka Hodge, the innings soon steadily folded.
