Barbados in strong position

GEORGETOWN, CANA:

A career-best bowling performance from fast bowler Ryan Nurse wrecked Windward Islands' first innings and lifted Barbados into a strong position on the opening day of their fifth and final round match in the West Indies youth cricket championship.

Nurse captured seven wickets for 59 runs to help Barbados dismiss Windwards for 171 in their first innings just before the extended tea session.

Barbados, who desperately need an outright win to stay in contention for the Championship, were 60 without loss when stumps were drawn with opening batsmen Marlon Clarke and Ryan Wiggins undefeated on 32 and 20 respectively.

Bowling with sustained pace and hostility on either side of lunch, the enthusiastic Nurse almost singlehandely engineered Windwards demise with only Darren Sammy (42 not out) and Cosier Charles (23) offering any resistance.

Barbados' decision to send Windwards into bat paid off immediately. Nurse claimed the wickets of opening batsmen Gavin Roberts and Gaspard Prosper, both caught behind by Dwayne Smith, to leave Windwards 16 for two.

Fast bowler Antonio Thomas joined the act, getting rid of Liam Sebastien, caught at mid-on, to sink Windwards to 26 for three.

Kaschaka Cupid and Sergio Fedee tried to retrieve the situation with a 32-run, fourth-wicket stand before both fell to Nurse within seven runs of each other, beaten for pace and adjudged lbw.

Windwards went to lunch at 97 for five, but lost Marlon Henry in the first over after the interval when left-arm spin bowler Derek Bishop hit a catch to mid-on.

Nurse bowled Charles, while Bishop claimed his second wicket when he Windwards captain Alston Bobb caught and bowled for two.

It was 138 for nine when Nurse got his sixth victim, Shane Shillingford going caught for six.

The furtuitous Sammy, who rode his luck after being dropped by Alcindo Holder at second slip off Nurse before he had scored, and last man Dennis George then frustrated the Barbadians in a last-wicket stand of 33 before Nurse ended the innings.

Windwards had two chances to separate the Barbados opening batsmen, but failed to do so with Clarke being the lucky batsman on both occasions.

On 11, he was put down by Prosper at forward short-leg, while Roberts was the culprit at the same position when Clarke had added two more runs. The unlucky bowler on both occasions was off-spinner Shillingford.
