The cadet corps to unite, to serve

By Daviot Kelly, Youth Writer

Cadet training at the Caymannas Estate. - Winston Sill

JOINING THE Cadet Corps may seem really uncool. You have to do drills, stand for hours in the hot sun and do pushups if you're not getting things right. Not much fun is it?

Well it may not be as bad as you think. You see, the Corps is a great place for young people to get involved.

Do not think that the whole thing is just work, work, work. You can actually have a lot of fun.

They do rappelling, river crossing and map reading. Don't laugh at the last one, it may save you if you ever get lost in the woods. Of course, no paramilitary training would be complete without weapons training. In high schools, cadets are taught to use light rifles like the .22.

The corps also offers a chance for you to go overseas as well as scholarships for further education. Tell me one institution in which you can train to get your private pilot's license free of cost?

Furthermore, if you decide that you wish to make the armed forces your career, then starting out in the Cadet Corps can be a good first step. You can choose from the Airwing, the Marine Corps, Infantry or if you are a music lover, there is the Band.
