THE ROTARY Club in Montego Bay recently reopened the Lester Bevans Memorial Dental Clinic at Ramble Health Centre in Hanover. This project was launched 14 years ago by the Club under the Presidency of George Palmer. The dental clinic was fully equipped initially by District 5450 Colorado, USA, the Rotary Foundation and the Rotary Club of Montego Bay.
The Ramble Health Centre was completely destroyed by Hurricane Gilbert in 1988, and was consequently rebuilt in 1989, then reopened. All the equipment in the Dental Clinic were destroyed during the hurricane but were not replaced. The Ramble community was without this dental facility for a long time.
Immediate Past President of the Club, Bhagwan Chuganey, saw the need for the dental service to be restored in the area because the residents faced hardships in having to travel to Montego Bay or elsewhere to receive dental care. Under his leadership, the Rotary Club of Montego Bay renovated and outfitted the Dental Clinic with equipment valued at approximately $300,000.
In addition, a motor vehicle was purchased by the Club to transport Rotary volunteers to access the Government clinics served by the Club. Assistance for the refurbishing of the Clinic was received from the Rotary Clubs in District 6290, Michigan USA.
On hand to witness the ceremony were: Gordon Brown, chairman of the Western Reg-ional Health Authority, Dr. Michelle Foote, parish manager/Medical Officer of Hanover, Past Presidents George Palmer, Rev. C. S. Reid, Sonny Edwards, Ripton McPherson, Immediate past president Bhagwan Chuganey, Norman Hall, recently elected President, other distinguished Rotarians and members of the Ramble community.
