JLP leader's GCT arrears is a valid campaign issue

THE EDITOR, Sir:

LET ME get this straight. 'PNP campaign could threaten peace initiatives JLP'. Is this the recant of peace, another threat to hold our country at ransom, is it a bargaining chip for peace? Why should peace be threatened by the revelation, and daily reminder to the Jamaican people that Mr. Seaga, who is vying for the highest office in the country, has been less than honest about his personal financial obligations to our country.

1) Did Mr. Edward Seaga or his establishment fail to pay $30 million in GCT?

2) Did Mr. Seaga conveniently forget that he borrowed millions from Century National Bank?

If the answers to the above questions are yes, then why are they not legitimate questions to be raised about Mr. Seaga's moral and fiscal responsibility therefore his ability to lead the country? How do we as a nation expect our people to be financially responsible and honest if our leaders do not adhere to those same values?

The collection of GCT and other taxes plays a vital role in the country's revenue intake. Money that is used to provide for the basic needs of our country's health, education, security, and the list goes on. Are we to believe, Mr. Seaga if made Prime Minister of Jamaica will be in a moral position to make policies and enforce those policies that he himself is accused of flouting?

Let corruption not continue to be the order of the day in Jamaica. Let's hold our leaders and those vying for leadership positions at every levels of authority to the highest degree, none excluded. All well thinking Jamaicans should be appalled and take exception to the remarks and demand a retraction for the rubbish coming out of the JLP.

The Jamaica Chamber of Commerce and the Jamaican Labour Party both got it wrong. Wrongdoing should be neither condoned nor silenced by any means, even at the expense of peace. Mr. Seaga has an obligation, the same obligation my mother and many other Jamaican had to our country.

My mother fulfilled her obligation by paying her GCT. Why should Mr. Seaga not do the same or be imprisoned for tax evasion?

I am etc.,
