Lambert's ton lifts Surrey A

Junior Dowie

Surrey A's Lambert plays defensively during his innings of 129 against Surrey B yesterday.

FORMER Jamaica youth player Tamar Lambert struck a solid century as leaders Surrey A scored a competitive 238 on yesterday's opening day of the Jamaica County Cricket Championship match at Up Park Camp.

Top bowler for Surrey B was spinner Bryan Murphy who bagged five wickets.

Scores: Surrey A 238 from 90 overs, Surrey B 26 without loss.

Surrey A were given a good 45-run start by openers Renford Pinnock Jr (38) and Keith Hibbert (14). Hibbert was the first to go caught Mark Gray at silly-point off Omar Burke. Lambert joined Pinnock and the two took the score to 88 before Pinnock became the first of Murphy's five victims.

Lambert then took charge. He posted his 50 in 104 minutes from 99 deliveries with seven fours and the hundred in 184 deliveries with 12 fours and a five. He was eventually run out for a well played 129 which included 16 fours from 227 deliveries.

Murphy ended with five for 56 from 24 overs. West Indies Test player Chris Gayle bowled eight overs for 16 runs.

Gayle 17 not out and Mel Wint 4 will resume batting for Surrey B today.

AT SABINA PARK: AN interesting final day battle looms today at Sabina Park between Kingston and Middlesex who are fighting for first innings points.

Kingston were bowled out just before the close for 285. Bad light prevented Middlesex from replying after the opening pair of Leon Garrick and David Harrison had made their way to the crease at 5:30 p.m.

Highlight of the first day was a century from No. 4 batsman Matthew Sinclair (126), a knock which held his team's innings together as only opener Ray Ferguson (43) and Mario Ventura (42) offered meaningful contributions.

But the real fight of Kingston's innings came from a century partnership (138) between Ventura and Sinclair, who came together after No. 2 batsman Simon Jackson had retired hurt on 17 with the score on 63 for the loss of Ferguson's wicket.

In a partnership which offered some wonderful strokes to the delight of the few spectators, both batsmen were at their best after lunch as they carefully played the slow bowlers after being very severe on Hensley Wilshaw, Leon Bent and Brenton Beckford earlier.

Slow bowlers Sadeeq Brown (seven for 73) and David Powell (three for 73) were the leading bowlers for Middlesex.

AT JARRETT PARK: Melbourne are well placed to take first innings points from Cornwall.

Scores: Melbourne 213 (Aubrey Wollaston 59, Dillon Ebanks and Conroy Miller 30 each; Ainsley Goss 3-62, Vinord Woolcock 2-18, Paul Murray 2-46, Myron Wilson 2-41). Cornwall 23 without loss.
